Ulusaba Private Game Reserve
Ulusaba Private Game Reserve is a size of 13 500 hectares and is highly populated with wildlife offering, some of the best game viewing in the Sabi Sands with excellent close up Big-5 sightings. The off road game drives take place in open 4×4’s and are lead by a highly experienced tracker and ranger. Photographic opportunities are endless with uncrowded sightings limited to two vehicles at any one sighting.
Ulusaba Game Reserve is owned by Sir Richard Branson and is part of the Virgin Limited Edition. Ulusaba houses three luxury lodges on the reserve, Safari Lodge, Rock Lodge and Cliff Lodge. Each luxurious lodge at Ulusaba boasts exquisite decor which blends into its surroundings. Rock Lodge and Cliff lodge welcome children of all ages and have an exciting ‘cub program’. The program is designed to keep the children entertained with educational activities, learning about the bush. While the children are learning about the bush, the adults can find some time to relax and unwind. Safari Lodge welcomes children over 12 years only.
Malaria:
- Although a malaria zoned area, the risk of malaria in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve is usually low, even in the summer months.
- The highest risk period is between November and April (summer rainy season).
- Most types of mosquito that are encountered will not carry the malaria parasite.
- Mosquitoes most often bite between dusk and dawn.
- The risk of malaria can be reduced by preventing mosquito bites by covering exposed skin with light clothing or insect repellents, ensuring netted screens are kept closed and burning anti-mosquito coils.
- Malaria prophylactic drugs can be taken that will further decrease the chances of contracting malaria.

Wildlife:
- High concentration of Big 5 with large herds of elephant and buffalo, as well as large lion prides.
- Other wildlife include but are not limited to the hippopotamus, giraffe, zebra, cheetah, African wild dog, hyaena, warthog and many other cat and antelope species.
- Large antelope herds support the populations of predators in the reserve.
- Over 500 bird species have been recorded in the region. Many can be seen in the reserve.
Game Drives:
- Game drives take place twice a day in the early mornings and afternoons for a duration of 3-4 hours.
- Game drives are led by an experienced guide and tracker team.
- Vehicles are allowed to go off road to track and follow the wildlife.
- Strict traverse rules are in place and vehicle numbers are limited in each reserve. A maximum of two vehicles are allowed at any sighting.
- Night drives and guided bush walk are permitted
- 6-seater vehicles.

Getting There:
- Ulusaba private airstrip is the closet airstrip, two daily chartered flights from Johannesburg are operated by Federal Airlines.
- Skukuza (SKU) is the closet commercial airport to Ulusaba, daily flights operate from Johannesburg and Cape Town.
- Flight time from Johannesburg to Skukuza or Ulusaba private airstrip: 60 minutes
- Flight time from Cape Town to Skukuza: 2 hours 30 minutess
- Road transfers from Skukuza to Ulusaba take 60 minutes and are arranged in open 4×4 safari vehicles.
Location:
- Ulusaba is located in the western edge of the Sabi Sands Game Reserve and shares unfenced borders with the Ulusaba, Savanna, Inyati and Dulini game reserves.
- Sabi Sands lies in South Africa’s far north-eastern corner in the Mpumalanga province. The private reserve forms part of the Greater Kruger, sharing unfenced borders with the Kruger National Park.
